The University of South Carolina has developed a sociology course dedicated to the life, work and rise to fame of pop star Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga and the Sociology of the Fame is to be taught by Professor Mathieu Deflem, a fan of the singer.

Course documents said students would learn to “engage in sound and substantiated scholarly thinking” on issues related to her fame.

The course, which has its own blog, is due to start in spring 2011.

The Belgian born sociologist, whose research interests also include counter-terrorism, international policing, crime control and internet technology, says he has seen Lady Gaga in concert 30 times.

‘Sociological dimensions’

“We’re going to look at Lady Gaga as a social event,” Prof Deflem told the USC student newspaper, the Daily Gamecock.

“Then I thought ‘Oh, what the hell? – Let’s make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame”

“So it’s not the person, and it’s not the music. It’s more this thing out there in society that has 10 million followers on Facebook and six million on Twitter. I mean, that’s a social phenomenon.”

The course description says it aims to “unravel some of the sociologically relevant dimensions of the fame of Lady Gaga with respect to her music, videos, fashion, and other artistic endeavours”.

It will look at business and marketing strategies, the role of old and new media, fans and live concerts, gay culture, religious and political themes, sex and sexuality, and the cities of New York and Hollywood, it says.

Prof Deflem said he initially planned to call the course the Sociology of Fame or the Sociology of Celebrity, and to use Lady Gaga as an example.

“Then I thought, ‘Oh, what the hell? Let’s make the whole freaking course about Lady Gaga and her rise to fame.’

Also a fan of Frank Zappa, Prince, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Status Quo and Ritchie Blackmore, Prof Deflem says his interest in Lady Gaga began when he first saw her perform on television on 9 January 2009.

“I hope that [prospective students] are at least somewhat fans of Gaga,” he told the student newspaper.

“They don’t have to be hardcore fans. The better fan will not necessarily be the better student. But you have to have some interest in the topic. So if you really don’t like her, you probably shouldn’t take the course.”

Speaking to the BBC, he said the media reaction to the launch of the course has been “simply staggering”, and the academic endeavour has become caught up in the very phenomenon it is exploring.

“The story has gone viral… My work on terrorism got a lot of attention as well, but that is dwarfed by the Gaga course!”, he said.

This is beyond weird and sad. I mean, yeah, let’s all study the life of an openly self declared b**ch who is all for sex, drugs, violence, murder and negativity. I mean come on, who cares about terrorism, biology, maths, religion, language, literature, (goes on and on)…

Their new puppet is Justin Bieber, it’s pretty obvious because if you’ve seen how ludacris is a puppet and a famous rap star who’s from the south side collaborating with this kid that would NEVER happen. Now their targeting young children as young as 5, it’s sad to see little girls crying over the fact that biebers kissing another girl that’s just not right.

What is there to gain at the end of the course? do you get a piece of paper with a message on it saying ‘Gaga no.1 fan/monster’? This is ridiculous.
Especially with rising tuition fees, who would pay for this?
    God will do justice.. (yay)

I don’t see why people are up in arms about this. It’s one class that you can CHOOSE to take or not to take. No one is being forced, and those taking it are probably already brainwashed by the Illuminati. No harm done in my eyes.

They already have control over the educational curriculum to deviate people from the truth. This would just be another one of those courses, to manipulate and brainwash people, the only difference is, they’re doing this openly.

Also, sociology has its origin dating back to the theories developed in order to ‘make sense out of the world of class, status, gender, race, etc.’ By communists like Darwin, Marx, Freud, Derkheim and the rest of them who were nothing but zionists with Jewish origin.

Not surprised at this course, but I am surprised at those who are wasting their tuition fees (if there is any) at a Celebrity based on fake theories only to deviate and misguide people from the realities of life.

Someone calling himself Saddam Hussein gets to have an opinion about this???? I think you nut jobs are overlooking the fact that it is a SOCIOLOGY course. How the media affects socialization. Music artists have forever been impacting our culture and socialization. There have been college courses offered about the Beatles, superheros, Harry Potter, Star Trek, the porn industry, The Simpsons, and Star Wars. All of these things impact our socialization. I think you are overlooking the fact that its not just a class learning about Lady Gaga. It’s a class learning about the impact of Lady Gaga on our culture and how society responds to that. Get a grip.

before bashing this post and it’s content please read up in the course blog/page and I’m sure your views will change. The course is not for people who want to act like Lady Gaga or be like her, it so happens that Lady Gaga has amazingly been able to all of the public’s attention away from her personal life to focus only on her music. She calls herself the master of fame, she studied how easy people can fall in and out of fame and so she developed a series of disruptions that’d would make the media care more about her stardom than her private life.
So pls people, read the blog (the link is highlighted orange “which has its own blog” in the article) and then afterwards try and bash the idea and see if you make valid points. The course is not about illuminati, it’s all about personality. You must also follow the 60minutes interview link in the blog to see who really Lady Gaga is from her own point of view (probably the only valid point of view).
